I Am Thankful For: Going to College

I think that if nothing else, College has instilled in me, or rather re-kindled, a passion for learning and knowledge.

From sheer admiration of the Professors that can discourse and discuss the most varied issues in length to the satisfaction of realizing you are learning something that will make a difference in your life later, I think the experience of going to College is one that everyone should have.

Of course, as several things in life, College has not been totally devoid of the occasional disappointment and disilusionment. Nevertheless, I have this firm belief that everyone really should go to College.

Another additional effect College has had in my life is my questioning of my initial choices for a career. In my experience and opinion, only after taking a few classes here and there you can really get an appreciation and understanding of what really entails getting a degree and what your career choice may have in reserve for you.

For example, I would like to be an Engineer and to work with Robotics, but I do not have a natural ability for Maths, so that was sort of changed with time.

On the other hand, I really like History and Languages, especially English. Therefore, I think I would like to eventually delve deeper into the learning of both and eventually become a full-blown scholar. Maybe even a University Professor of Literature or History, or both. Maybe…

I am telling you, this voyage of learning is simply amazing.

I could certainly name some of my professors who have been very infuential in my life, but I am afraid I might overlook someone and I would not like to offend anyone. Actually, I think they have all influenced me in one way or another, be it for good or ill. The really good ones have inspired me to be as good as they are or even better, and the mediocre ones, believe me, I’ve seen my share of them, well, they inspired me to not ever be like them. Ever.

So, a big thank you for my good professors and a bigger one for the bad ones.

Hey, I just thought of something: maybe I might start a series of posts listing all that I am thankful for. Interesting… but maybe it’s been done too much already. We’ll see.

Keep Your Brain Healthy

I was reading blogs today when I came across this interesting one called Dumb Little Man. I think the title is misleading, because his stuff is pretty neat.

Anyway, I started reading this post talking about ways to supercharge your brain and how to keep it sharp with simple strategies and food. The information there is quite interesting, but I think some of the suggestions may simply not be possible for college students. At least tip number three: “Sleep well.” Come on now. Has he ever heard of finals week?

Anyway, he then lists a series of interesting ideas and lists a couple that I really am interested in. One of them is really in tune with one of my passions: Languages.

I love languages and I would like to learn several. In fact, I intend to learn as many as I can. But, studying another language in earnest… maybe after College, though.

Like I said, he mentions that a good way to keepo the brain working in top condition is by learning a new language. I like it that there is this link that when you click on it you go to another post he wrote about this free website where you can learn another language for free. It is called Mango Languages. I can’t wait to try it out.

The best thing about the site is that it is free and the second best thing is that you can learn it at your own pace (at least according to the author). Nice and relaxed, just the way I like it. That’s how I taught mysef English and that’s the way I intend to teach myself at least one more language. Maybe two. Maybe even three. Well, why not go for broke and learn at least four more languages? Yeah, right. Wait a minute, did I not write in another post that I like a challenge? I think that would be worth it.

Well, anyway, check out the blog and the site and if you like them, let them know. I think they will appreciate it.
